Conference-CD Wizard - the software that converts the "raw" documents to CD format - is a Windows® (2000 or later) application. In addition Office® (2000 or later) must be installed in order for the PowerPoint® conversion to work and for the title to be extracted and a search index generated from Office® documents. However the CDs produced will run on almost any operating system.
After downloading the development kit (confcdkit.exe) you should run it by double clicking it. Answer the questions that the wizard asks and, by default, you will end up with the application in
\Program Files\PHD\ConfCD. There will be four subfolders:
doc- containing this documentation,
redist- containing files to be copied into the "burn" folder to enable certain functions to work,
template- containing the template webpage and the image files needed for CD navigation, and
testmode- containing files needed in test mode.
The Conference-CD wizard copies all the source documents to the CD Burn folder, including all the subfolders. If appropriate, it converts PowerPoint files into HTML pages so that they can be viewed easily in a browser.
The Conference-CD wizard then adds various navigation options to the CD, including a contents page for each folder, an alphabetical index and full text search. All added pages use a template to ensure a consistent look and feel. Templates can customised by Professional Subscription and Consultant Subscription licence holders.
The contents page for each folder contains a list of links to the documents in the folder. The link name is taken from the title of each document (or the subfolder name). If a document has no title then the wizard will use the file name. The entries on the contents pages will appear by default in alphabetical order.
You can use Test Mode in the Conference-CD wizard to change the order of entries in each contents page, to hide certain documents or folders and to substitute alternative titles. However it obviously saves a lot of time if this stage is planned carefully and the final structure of the CD borne in mind.
By default all the files in a folder will be listed on the contents page. However where one file is called "index.htm", "index.html", "default.htm" etc Conference-CD Wizard will assume that all the files and subfolders in the folder are part of a web site. In this instance the link from the previous contents page will open the "index.htm" file directly. Conference-CD Wizard will also "hide" any files in a folder that are linked from web pages in the same folder.
When you start Conference-CD for the first time you will need to click on the "New project" button then overtype the Project name box with the name you want to use.
Once you have used Conference-CD it will start with the last project you ran in the "Project name" box. The "Make a CD image now" button will be available to allow you to skip over the intervening screens and rebuild a project quickly after you have made any modifications.
The welcome screen also has a box for entering your licence ID although the chances are that you will run the application under the Evaluation licence the first few times you use it.
You need to specify the source of the information to be put onto the CD. This is the working folder into which you copied all the documents. Use the "Choose folder" button to browse the file system and enter the path quickly.
By default the CD burn folder will be created automatically in the same parent folder as the source information folder but with "burn" appended to its name. If you browse the file system you will be given the option of creating a new folder. The new folder will be created in whichever folder is highlighted in the explorer type window; you can then change its name from "New Folder".
You can select to run the wizard in expert mode which will give further screens to specify details of the CD creation.
This screen gives you the option of saving your project which is a good idea if you have modified any of the settings.
If you move to this screen by pressing "Next" from the "Ready to make your CD Burn Folder" Screen, Conference-CD will immediately run through the various stages to build the information in the burn folder. If you jump to this screen by jumping straight from the Welcome Screen using the "Make a CD image now" button you will be able to select one of the buttons: "Rebuild CD", "Test on hard disk", "Start CD burner" or "View information folder using Windows Explorer".
If you have virus checking software set up correctly on your computer you may get a warning during the building of the CD image. Most virus checking software will give you the option of allowing this particular script to run without warning in future.
If you have built the CD in Test Mode, then click on "Test on hard disk" to see how the CD looks. In Test Mode, use the on-page image buttons to hide, rename or move the entries on each contents page. When you are happy with the CD, turn off Test Mode and rebuild the CD - now burn the CD Burn folder to CD to test the finished product.
